The engine is four-cycle, four-cylinder with a cross-section arrangement in a front part of the car. Engines with a working volume of 1905 sm3 and 1998 sm3 with 16 valves have two top cam shafts. On all Peugeot models the water pump puts in action a toothed belt of a drive gear of system of a gas distribution. Lubricant - under the pressure created by the oil pump which is resulted by a chain from the right end of a bent shaft. On Peugeot models with 16 valves there is an oil cooler which is established under an oil filter. The engine code is backed out on a plate attached to the right front part of the engine basic block, on the engine with a working volume of 1761 sm3 is backed out directly on a cylinder block front face, and on the engine of 1998 sm3 - to the left of an oil filter.

Cars Peugeot 405 gasoline engines with a working volume of 1,4 l since 1993 prepare in Poland with a version of equipment GL. The basic differences (in comparison with earlier described cars Peugeot) consist in application of the engine (family TU), and also transmission (type МА) with the design differing from earlier described models.
